African-American ministers have come out for, and against, Obama’s stance on marriage equality.
LGBTQ activists of African descent have pondered what would be the catalyst to rally those African-American Christian ministers to support same-sex marriage and engage the black community in a nationwide discussion.
Last week the answer arrived in President Barack Obama’s support of marriage equality. Obama told Good Morning America news anchor Robin Roberts in an exclusive interview:
We are both practicing Christians, and obviously this position may be considered to put us at odds with the views of others, but, you know, when we think about our faith, the thing at root that we think about is not only Christ sacrificing himself on our behalf, but it’s also the Golden Rule, you know: Treat others the way you would want to be treated … I figure the most consistent I can be in being true to those precepts…
Just as Obama could no longer shrewdly fence-sit on the issue while winking a stealth nod to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) voters, black ministers who quietly professed to be allies to the LGBTQ community could no longer stay closeted from their congregations.
For these African-American ministers, the liability of Obama losing his 2012 reelection bid seems far greater than being publicly outed for not being in lockstep with their homophobic brethren.
“The institution of marriage is not under attack because of the president’s words,” Rev. Dr. Otis Moss, III of Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago told his church on Sunday. Moss is the successor of President Obama’s infamous former pastor, Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright.
But for many African-American ministers in opposition to Obama’s stance on marriage equality, the institution of marriage, at least within the black family, is under assault, and LGBTQ people further exacerbate the problem.
For these ministers, some of whom support LGBTQ civil rights but draw the line on same-sex marriage, espousing their opposition to same-sex marriage is a prophylactic measure to combat the epidemic of fatherlessness in black families. In scapegoating the LGBTQ community, these clerics are ignoring the social ills behind black fatherlessness, such as the systematic disenfranchisement of both African-American men and women, high unemployment, high incarceration, and poor education, to name a few.
In his homily Moss also stated:
Gay people have never been the enemy, and when we use rhetoric to suggest they are the source of all our problems, we lie on God and cause tears to fall from the eyes of Christ. … We must stay in dialogue and not allow our personal emotional prejudices or doctrines to prevent us from clearly seeing the possibility of the beloved community…
Immediately following Obama’s public declaration of support for marriage equality, a coalition of African-American civil rights leaders signed their names on an open letter affirming their solidarity with President Obama on marriage equality. Signees include Dr. Joseph Lawry of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, Melanie Campbell of the National Coalition for Black Civic Engagement, Julian Bond of the NAACP, and Rev. Al Sharpton.
Since Obama has come out with his support, many in the black community are working tirelessly to counter the barrage of attacks the he has received from opposing black clerics. For example, Dr. Pamela R. Lightsey, Associate Dean of Community Life and Lifelong Learning at Boston University School of Theology, has a petition going around the country asking African-American clergy and scholars for their support on behalf the president’s stance to counter the stereotype that “black folks are against homosexuality and gay marriage.”
NoWedge2012.com is another petition going around the country, aimed at reaching and informing African-American voters, particularly black Chirsitian voters, about strategies intended to divide the community this election year. In stressing that the black religious community is not theologically monolithic, the petition states:
There is a great diversity in Black America on the cultural and theological understanding of sexual orientation than the media or popular culture give credence (recent polls show that African Americans are equally divided on marriage equality). We acknowledge that it was President Obama’s faith that guided his shift in embracing marriage equality. Our community has the ability to hold different positions and not demonize what is perceived to be the “other.” In light of this complexity Black America should hear from candidates with policy positions that are holistically beneficial for our community as a family.
The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), a right-wing organization that supports presidential hopeful Mitt Romney, is actively courting black churches as part of its strategic 2012 election game plan, which includes driving a wedge between LGBTQ and African-American voters. And the black community mustn’t fall prey to it.
If the first African-American president lost his reelection bid because of certain black pastors’ homophobic views on marriage equality, that would be tragic, and history would not look kindly on their actions.
Obama is the president of the United States, not the pastor of the United States. He’s the president of all the people, not some of the people.
As African Americans who have battled for centuries against racial discrimination, we have always relied on our president and his administration to fight for and uphold our civil rights, because too many pastors across the country and throughout centuries wouldn’t.

ALMATY, Kazakhstan (AP) ? A Russian-made Soyuz craft carrying three astronauts has docked with the International Space Station, putting the crew in place for the imminent arrival of the first ever privately owned cargo ship to the orbiting lab.
The Soyuz eased into position Thursday morning Moscow time over the Mongolian-Kazakh border after a two-day trip that began with the launch from the Russian-leased Baikonur cosmodrome in southern Kazakhstan.
NASA astronaut Joseph Acaba and Russian cosmonauts Gennady Padalka and Sergei Revin are set for a four-and-half-month stay in space.
Their arrival comes just two days ahead of the planned launch of the privately owned SpaceX’s Dragon Capsule from Cape Canaveral.
The space station is currently occupied by Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko, NASA astronaut Don Pettit and Holland’s Andre Kuipers.

Centaurus A, also known as NGC 5128 [1], is a peculiar massive elliptical galaxy with a supermassive black hole at its heart. It lies about 12 million light-years away in the southern constellation of Centaurus (The Centaur) and has the distinction of being the most prominent radio galaxy in the sky. Astronomers think that the bright nucleus, strong radio emission and jet features of Centaurus A are produced by a central black hole with a mass of about 100 million times that of the Sun. Matter from the dense central parts of the galaxy releases vast amounts of energy as it falls towards the black hole.
This Wide Field Imager (WFI) picture allows us to appreciate the galaxy’s elliptical nature, which shows up as the elongated shape of the fainter outer parts. The glow that fills much of the picture comes from hundreds of billions of cooler and older stars. Unlike most elliptical galaxies, however, Centaurus A’s smooth shape is disturbed by a broad and patchy band of dark material that obscures the galaxy’s centre.
The dark band harbours large amounts of gas, dust and young stars. Bright young star clusters appear at the upper-right and lower-left edges of the band along with the red glow of star-forming clouds of hydrogen, whilst some isolated dust clouds are silhouetted against the stellar background. These features, and the prominent radio emission, are strong evidence that Centaurus A is the result of a merger between two galaxies. The dusty band is probably the mangled remains of a spiral galaxy in the process of being ripped apart by the gravitational pull of the giant elliptical galaxy.
The new set of images from WFI include long exposures through red, green and blue filters as well as filters specially designed to isolate the light from glowing hydrogen and oxygen. The latter help us to spot the known optical jet features around Centaurus A, which were barely visible in a previous image from the Wide Field Imager (eso0315a: http://www.eso.org/public/images/eso0315a/).
Extending from the galaxy to the upper left corner of the image are two groups of reddish filaments, which are roughly lined up with the huge jets that are prominent in radio images. Both sets of filaments are stellar nurseries, containing hot young stars [2]. Above the left side of the dusty band, we find the inner filaments, lying about 30 000 light-years away of the nucleus. Further out, around 65 000 light-years away from the galaxy’s nucleus and close to the upper left corner of the image, the outer filaments are visible. There is also possibly a very much fainter trace of a counter jet extending to the lower right.
Centaurus A has been extensively studied at wavelengths ranging from radio all the way to gamma-rays. In particular, radio and X-ray observations have been crucial for studying the interaction between the energetic output of the central supermassive black hole and its surroundings, see eso0903. Studies of Centaurus A with ALMA are just beginning.
Many of the observations of Centaurus A used to make this image were taken to see whether it was possible to use ground-based surveys to detect and study variable stars in galaxies like Centaurus A outside the local group [3]. More than 200 new variable stars in Centaurus A were discovered.

Thumbi Ndung?u left Kenya 1995 to study medicine at Harvard. He later returned to Africa on a mission to exploit HIV?s vulnerabilities. Now the head of the HIV Pathogenesis Program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Ndung?u spoke with Scientific American contributor Brendan Borrell about a research breakthrough early in his career that helped set the pace for the Kenyan?s ongoing study of genes in the immune system that may help to fight AIDS and lead to a vaccine. When asked which moment has been the most exciting of his young career, Ndung?u responded:
?The most exciting moment for me was when I succeeded in developing the first molecular clone of HIV subtype C as a graduate student at Harvard in the late 1990s. HIV subtype C is the most common subtype in the world. About 50 percent of all infections are caused by subtype C, but developing an infectious clone was difficult for reasons that we don?t fully understand.
?An infectious clone is when you take a virus and put it in a bacterial plasmid [a circular strand of DNA] so that you can grow it over and over again. The example that I like to use is that it?s almost like a cassette recording of the entire genetic information of the virus. Every time you need to use the virus in a well-controlled experiment in the laboratory, you can then get that infectious molecular clone and put it in a cell to make copies of it.
?I?d been trying for three years to make a clone, and was getting very frustrated. There were many other groups around the world that had also been trying and had not been successful. Once we had what we thought was a clone, we ran a series of experiments to make sure we had the full length of the HIV inserted. Then we put it into cells and waited for several days before testing whether we were getting active virus production. We were.
?It?s hard to say what we did that was different from other groups, but I probably just kept trying until something worked. It also took a bit of luck.?
